How do I fund Payday Super without wrecking cash flow?
Payday Super means super now goes out every pay run instead of every quarter, and the float that used to carry you between quarters is gone. If payday has started to feel tight, you are not alone, and it is fixable. Here is how we help business owners keep every pay run on time.

Short answer: you put back the buffer Payday Super took away, and we can help you do it. Since 1 July 2026, super goes out with every pay run instead of every quarter. You are not paying more, you are paying sooner, and that quarterly gap was quietly carrying a lot of businesses. If payday has started to feel tighter than it used to, that is why. The good news is it is very fixable.
How do I fund Payday Super without wrecking cash flow?
Short answer: with a buffer that moves with your pay cycle. A business line of credit covers wages and super on payday, then you pay it back down as your customers pay you. You generally pay interest only on what you use. We find the right one and set it up for you.
Here is the thing most business owners are feeling right now. Your customers did not start paying you any faster on 1 July. But your super did start going out faster. Same money, less time.
If your income lands like clockwork every week, you might barely notice. If you are waiting on progress payments, working on account terms, or riding the quiet months and the big ones, you will notice every fortnight. That is not a sign anything is wrong with your business. It is just timing, and timing is exactly what a line of credit is built for.
Why does payday suddenly feel so much tighter?
Short answer: because the quarterly float is gone. From 1 July 2026, super has to be paid with wages and reach each employee’s fund within 7 business days of payday. Before that, it only had to be paid at least every three months, so that money sat in your account for weeks. Now it leaves every pay run.
The ATO’s free Small Business Superannuation Clearing House also closed on 1 July 2026, so plenty of owners had to change how they pay super at the same time. The Fair Work Ombudsman’s Payday Super page has the official detail.
What Payday Super changed for your cash flow
| What changed | Before 1 July 2026 | Payday Super, from 1 July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| How often super is paid | At least every three months. | Every pay run, at the same time as wages. |
| When it must reach the fund | By the quarterly due date. | Within 7 business days of payday. |
| What it meant for cash flow | Super sat in your account for weeks before it was paid. | Super leaves your account with every pay run. |
| Free ATO clearing house | Available to small businesses. | Closed on 1 July 2026. |
Payday Super did not change how much you pay. It changed when you pay it, and for a lot of businesses that is the part that hurts.
What does it cost if Payday Super goes out late?
Short answer: far more than the super itself. Miss the 7-day window and the super guarantee charge applies to that payday, with interest at the ATO’s rate compounding daily plus an administrative uplift of 60%. Leave it unpaid after a notice and a 25% penalty can follow, and that penalty can’t be remitted.
That is the real risk with a tight payday. One slow week can turn into a charge that costs far more than the super you were short on. The ATO’s guide to the new super guarantee charge breaks it all down. One small mercy: the charge itself is now tax deductible, but the interest and the penalty are not.
Paying on time, every time, is the cheapest option by a mile. That is the whole point of having a buffer.
Can one facility cover super, wages, BAS and the ATO?
Short answer: yes, and that is what makes it so useful. One approved limit can cover payday, your BAS, an ATO bill or a big supplier run. With the ATO dropping credit cards after 30 November 2026, it also replaces the card a lot of owners used as their backup for the big bills.
Payday Super is one of three changes hitting business owners this year. ATO interest stopped being deductible from 1 July 2025, and card payments to the ATO end after 30 November. It is a lot to absorb at once. One well set up facility handles all of it, and our guide on using a line of credit to pay the ATO, BAS and suppliers shows how.
I am already a bit behind. Can you still help?
Short answer: yes, and the sooner we talk, the better. Finance can often clear an ATO balance and give you the room to stay on top of every pay run from here on. Falling behind is usually a timing problem, not a business problem, and timing problems are exactly what we sort out every day.
Nobody plans to fall behind. A big job pays late, a quiet month lands at the wrong time, and suddenly you are juggling. There is no judgement here. We look at where you are, what is owed and what your business looks like, and work out the cleanest way forward. Our guide on paying ATO debt now credit cards are ending covers that side in more detail.
If you have been trading for a while, many facilities can be assessed on your bank statements, so there is no waiting on your accountant. Our guide to a business loan with 12 months trading explains why. Newer businesses have options too. We work with business owners at every stage.
